Mastering Amazon product titles: Tips to boost clicks and sales

Dec 20, 2024

If you’re selling on Amazon, you already know that product titles are a big deal.

They’re not just about adding a bunch of keywords – they’re your chance to grab attention and close the deal.

Why Amazon product titles matter

Amazon product titles help shoppers find your products and make up their minds about buying from you.

A well-optimized title can significantly affect where your product appears in search results.

It’s the first thing shoppers see, making it prime real estate for keywords and critical product details.

Once they find your listing, the title also has a big impact on the buying decision.

Here’s how to nail product titles to grow your sales:

Key elements of a well optimized title

Length and format: For most categories, aim for up to 200 characters, but keep in mind that the first 85 characters are key, especially on mobile devices. Use the space wisely to make an impact.

Keywords and brand name: Pack your most important keyword and value proposition into those first 85 characters. While some brands put their names first, if yours isn’t widely known, try something like “[Primary keyword] by [Brand Name]” to catch the eyes of potential customers.

Product type and specific details: Include specifics like size, colour, or model so customers know right away if your product will meet their needs.

Key features and benefits: Highlight key features or benefits that make your product stand out. This could include materials, unique functionalities, or any certifications.

Best practices for crafting titles

Keep titles concise and informative: Be brief yet also descriptive. You want to ensure all important details are included, but keep to the point.

Use title case: Capitalize the first letter of each word to make your title easier to read. Avoid all caps, which can appear aggressive or unprofessional.

Limit special characters: Stick to hyphens and commas if needed. Special characters can clutter your title and might not be picked up by Amazon’s search engine.

Prioritize readability: Your title should flow naturally. Avoid keyword stuffing – it’s all about balance.

Common title mistakes to avoid

Keyword stuffing: You don’t need to repeat yourself! Readability is an important aspect of SEO marketing on Amazon.

Inconsistent formatting: Titles should be well-structured and avoid using special characters where possible.

Ignoring Amazon’s guidelines: Always follow Amazon’s guidelines to avoid having your listing taken down. It’s a hassle you don’t need. Each category has different requirements for titles and Amazon provides guides for these that you will need to abide by to avoid being search suppressed.

Best practices to protect your listing on Amazon

Regularly review titles: Amazon updates its guidelines, so make sure to review and tweak your titles regularly to stay on top. You will see in your Seller Central dashboard if your product has been suppressed or is at risk of suppression.

Monitor competitors: Keep an eye on how competitors are structuring their titles and adjust yours to stay competitive.  Measure performance through the Manage Experiments function on Amazon as you see competitors doing different things with their product titles.

Use Amazon’s tools: Tools like Amazon’s Brand Registry will keep your listings secure from unauthorized changes and counterfeiters.  The last thing you want is to have a reseller changing your title or images on you; or worse yet, a competitor.

Download the category listing report: If something goes wrong, this report will let you quickly upload a flat file to reactivate your listing. This could save you hours of heartache if you try to get your product reactivated at 4 p.m. on a Friday!

Put your best title forward

It’s worth spending time on your Amazon product titles: they have a big influence on your product’s visibility and odds of winning the buy box

By following these tips, you’ll craft titles that not only rank well but also catch the eye of potential buyers. Remember, your title is your first shot at making a great impression – make it count!
